Rob,
I flew for ~ 4 months in primer (including
a trip to Oshkosh)
and didn’t have a significant change in clearance for my skybolt cowl
fasteners. The adjustment step size, while only ½ turn of the threaded
insert, is rather coarse. The spring load under the screw takes up the fine
adjustment. I just made sure the springs weren’t completely bottomed out
when I did the initial adjustment. Plus, if you find any too tight afterwards a
dental pick can pull back th elocking collar and you can loosen the insert one
step.

Subject: [LML] Adjusting Skybolt
Cowl Fasteners
I'm in the throes of installing my
Skybolt cowl fasteners (adjustable SK-213, if I recall correctly). It's
pretty easy, although the fasteners are difficult to engage and disengage with
the black adjustment pin still installed. (The innards are free to spin.)
I tried removing the pin on a
non-installed receptacle and it was difficult to put the pin back in for
subsequent readjustment. (Actually it was difficult to pull the locking
ring out with a pick. Once that was accomplished it was easy to reinstall
the pin.)
My question is this -- if I adjust it
properly now, prior to primer and paint, will I need to redjust them after
paint? If not, I'll just set them now and pull out the pins.
