I replaced the 7 1/2 year old battery because it could have been the problem.  I have in-fact replaced both batteries even though only one plays a part in the primary system.  Maybe I shouldn't assume that a new battery is a good battery?

How did you test the single battery?  If it was load tested or just voltage?  Same issue for me, the battery failed under load causing the same symptoms.  24v system for me.
