Here's another consideration.  Heat.  If I remember correctly, B&C regulators have a max operating temp of 90C.  If the regulator is mounted on the engine compartment side of the fire wall, the temps can easily exceed 90C.  I lost a regulator for just such a situation so I added a 3/4" blast tube from the back of the baffling to the regulator area for the new one and that has lasted for years.  I know the temp in that area because I have a roaming CAT probe (display limit is 99C). 
 
If it becomes true that temperature has damaged your regulator (after performing B&C tests), install the new one inside the aircraft if at all possible.
