Pete,

I have been using the dual LSE Plasma III system for about 6 years.  I used the mag gear driven sensors for about a year with timing problems introduced by vibration of the D-sub connectors at the sensors.  Since then I have been using the crank sensor setup with great success along with Denso Iridium moped plugs and a 5 Ah back-up battery for one system should the aircraft electric system have a total failure..

The money spent to have Klaus set the magnets in the flywheel is well worth it - Since I have a 9:1 CR, the base timing is set to 20 DBTDC.

Several years ago I purchased a LSE Plasma III CD Ignition system for my O-320-E2D which used the Hall Effect sensor which mounts on one of the mag pads on the rear of the engine.

I was never able to get the system to work for very long - seemed to be affected by temperature.  Even went to see Klaus who put in a new circuit card in the sensor and even have me a new computer.  Still wouldn't work for more than a few minutes at a time, and I ended up taking it off after several rewire attempts which resulted in no change, so it was removed and replaced by the magneto - which has been working very well.

The whole deal was pretty disappointing as when the LSE unit was working it gave me better power (as was evidenced by greater static RPM and better climb rate) with improved fuel consumption.

Am considering my options and have decided to give it one more try, but this time trying a crank sensor vs the Hall Effect unit.

Anyone who has one of these systems on their plane with good luck using the crank sensor, please advise.

Thanks!
