Although Lance fought it TOOTH and NAIL, the wide horizontal stabilizer was practically forced on him back in the early 90's when the Austrailian CAA flew a Lancair with the small stabilizer and refused to approve it for IFR, thus cutting off a major market for the Lancair. 

After investing the time and $$$ to develop the wide stabilizer, it suddenly became a 'good' thing and was included as part of all kits thereafter. I like the small stabilizer.
