One of my fellow A36TC owners departed IFR from Manassas for Atlanta
this past weekend in 5 miles and haze. Climbing out through 7,000 feet
Dulles departure called out circling, high speed traffic at 12 o'oclock,
indicating 8,500 feet, ground speed 210 knots. Shortly thereafter the
controller stopped the Bonanza's climb to avoid the high speed traffic two
miles ahead, 210 knots, converging. There was a brief streak in the sky
which was just caught in the corner of the eye of Bonanza pilot. The
controller called the high speed traffic no longer a factor and asked if
the Bonanza pilot could determine the type of aircraft. He said no, and
thought to himself, but the pilot had a big s***-eating grin on his face.
The controller responded that it must have been a homebuilt.
Upon return from Atlanta the Bonanza pilot called me yesterday to
complain about having to stop his climb out of Manassas. I had departed a
few minutes before he did with another one of the A36TC owners on board to
show him the Lancair. While he did not get a good look at the blur of the
passing aircraft he knew it had to be us. Indeed it was. There is
something about being called high speed traffic that I like. And the demo
for our colleague? He just kept saying outstanding throughout the flight.
I can hardly look at a Piper or Cessna anymore (and not think target
practice) and while I thought I was going to keep my investment in the
Bonanza for the rest of the year, I have no interest in flying it if the
Lancair is ready.
