Lynn,

If I had it to do over again I would have got a used lawn tractor with a tow bar.
Issues:
1) traction.   the physics of getting a lot of wheel on that one wheel are just not great
2) steering.   let's see I'm pushing the airplane up the apron but I need to make a little turn here and....Ooops....now we're going down the apron
3) momemtum.   I honestly don't know how the powertow is on this but I can tell you that the tow buddy electric never achieves sufficient speed to use the airplane's 3000 lbs to get you up and over the apron.

Compare 18hp tractor, lots of weight including yours, really precise steering with no interruption in power, and probably not so pricey.

Subject: [LML] Powered Tow For Legacy

I recall, a while back, that there were questions about powered towing equipment for Lancairs.

Enclosed are emails I exchanged with Alisha at Northwest Manufacturing (makers of powered towing equipment) concerning my search for a power tow for my Legacy. For the past five years I have just pulled it around by myself. I, recently changed hangers and the new hanger entry ramp is uphill and it why too much work to put it away by myself. So I decided that was enough of that and started a search for some kind of power tow.

I looked at several types. I sent measurements of the nose gear to these folks to determine if their power tow could be used on the Legacy. They determined that they could make an adapter that will use the standard Legacy tow bar attach point to connect their 40EZ Tow.

If there are any folks out there that have been looking for a power Tow for there Lancair, perhaps this will fill your needs.

The extensions and spacer kit are both necessary to be able to reach and hook to your tow pins on the Legacy.

Our unit does not weigh much and is not hard to move without the Casters, although most people prefer having them.

Thank you!

What are the Extensions and Spacer kits? Are they necessary or just nice to have?

Is the unit hard to move without the Caster wheels?

Regards,

Lynn

See the attachment for a picture of the tow point for Lancair Legacy aircraft. The tow point is just above the nose wheel case. It is a flat plate that is 2 ½” wide. At the front of the flat plate are two arms that extend ½” on each side for a total width of 3 ½”. The arms are .318” in diameter. The distance from the ground to the center of the tow arms in 13 ½’.

I faxed the “how to measure for powertow adapters” measurements for towing by the center point of the nose wheel.

I plan to use a 40EZ model.
