I have had to significantly modify my cowling in order to fit around a 200
hp Lycoming IO 360. This included widening at the valve covers and bulging
for the tuned induction runners. I have considered having a new cowl made
before I go through all the effort to detail finish mine - and I was
considering having it made of a prepreg carbon fiber to save a significant
amount of weight.
So my question is - are there others out there who would be interested in
purchasing a pre-preg carbon fiber cowl for an IO360? Creating the mold is
the expensive part, so unless I can find a few others to share this cost, I
will drop the concept and just finish my existing cowl.
Here's the deal. Having the mold made will cost approximately $5,000. That
is based on using my (ugly) cowl for the plug. Each prepreg carbon fiber
cowl will then cost about $750 plus shipping. These folks will also install
fasteners, oil stick access door... for additional money. I like this
approach for three reasons:
1. The cowl will be about 6 to 8 lbs lighter than stock
2. The cowl will be much stronger, and I have heard complaints about the
stiffness/integrity of the cowl
3. I don't have to install the piano hinges and oil dipstick door
If anyone out there intends to install an IO 360 200hp - this is the easy
way. I can't tell you how many hours I have in my cowl now, and I am still
not done. I think it will take about 4 or 5 people to make this a
reasonable ($$) approach, although for someone who hasn't started on the
process, the value of this cowl may be higher!
