Hello Angier,
I've flown with an iPhone for a couple of years. I gotten no data
service (internet) at all at any altitude. I gotten voice calls
occasionally when at lower altitudes and in rural areas but the call
is usually dropped before any useful dialog occurs, so I consider that
non-functional. I do get some text messages when below about 5000 AGL
but even that's not reliable. It's pretty useless as a "phone" in the
cockpit.
The advantage of my iPhone is that no longer feel the need to carry a
laptop when traveling. I have iPhone apps that allow me to do my
weather checking and flight planning/filing. My "WingX" app also
allows me to download all current US approach plates and store them on
the phone. The resolution is very good/ very usable. I use it as my
terminal chart backup in the cockpit.
"WingX" also allows me to download a full DUATS weather briefing (FAA
legal briefing) prior to a flight. "ForeFlight" is another good
weather/ flight planning app. I also use "Weathermeister for the
iPhone" (my favorite weather site) extensively. I file my flight plans
with "FltPlan.com for the iPhone" and they are kind enough to send me
a text message with ATC's planned routing for my flight as soon as
they get it from ATC (at least 20 minutes prior to departure time).
