all pushing both right and left buttons do is *reboot*
the display, the trigger for going to ground maint mode, is simply the SD card
being installed in the slot and it being a valid (good) card.

Hi John,
I think you mean push the two dials at the same time while its
starting up…this reboots the computer and, I believe, tries to restart from the
card or send it to program mode….just from memory.

I almost hesitate to chime in
because I am just now starting to use the Chelton system and also because I am
not sure of the information I have that may be useful, but I was having
difficulty entering the programming functions of Chelton a couple of months ago
when I first started programming the darn things. I could not get the
card to bump the system into the program mode and finally after about an hour
of frustration and rereading the directions, I called the guys at Aerotronics
who had installed my panel. My recollection is that they suggested some
sort of magic like pushing two particular buttons at once to get the software
to trip into the correct mode. It’s possible this came from my onsite
wiring guy rather than Aerotronics. So obviously, I don’t know the
secret handshake even now, and am not entirely sure who taught it to me,
but I do know that it worked and I could then reliably get into the desired
mode.
You might try calling up Gary
Wirrell at Aerotronics or his smart guys to see if they can help.

I
bought two of the adapters as described on the chelton efis pilots web
site. Neither one of them worked.
I bought new smart media cards on ebay, smallest I could find was 128 mb and so
far so good.

The Smart Media cards and Cheltons are notorious for having issues. Try
cleaning the contacts and make sure that the card is in fully, reformat it on a
PC and sprinkle holy water on it. In general it is good to have a few
around. There is a limit on the size so 16 meg is good (forgot what the
limit is). You can still find smart media cards online- ebay and olympus
still sells them, but another option is to get an adapter that uses xD cards
which are more readily available. Look through the Chelton list http://www.cheltonefispilots.com.
There is a lot of information about the smart media issue.
