Doug, this is one area of construction that you'll want to consider
carefully before abandoning the original design. There are a LOT of
considerations that go into a canopy latch system, one being the ability to
open it from the inside, or the outside when you're incapacitated/trapped
inside. Weight, reliability, and many other things go into it as well.
There are MANY opportunities to improve on the original design of almost
everything with our airplanes, to include the canopy latch, but this is one
area where simplicity, reliability and security are paramount. Unless you're
improving one or all of these three, I'd recommend against changing... Just
my two cents; no flames intended...
