Gene, I used the upper cowl for a mold and used 1/4" of foam. That puts my plennum 1/4" away from the upper cowl. On the outer 2 inches of each side, I angled that away another 3/8 " or so to allow for the engine to rock from side to side at start up and shut down. I have the thing all painted up and it has never touched the upper cowl. Attached are a few pics. I am running an IO320. Hope that helps..
