Guy,
I had this problem on one of my ES
brakes and have heard from a couple of other builders with the same
issue. I took the leaking brake off and had Robbie Grove at
Grove Aircraft take a look at it. He said the cylinders seemed to
have corrosion inside. At his recommendation, I tried smoothing the
cylinder surfaces with some fine grit sandpaper and reassembling, but within a
few months, the leak reappeared. Rather than buy a whole new brake
assembly (which is pretty expensive), I got the Cleveland part number and
ordered a new cylinder from Aircraft Spruce along with a set of O rings for the
pistons. You need to remove the fittings and anchor bolts from the old
cylinder and reinstall them on the new one, but that isn't difficult. I'd
also take a good look at your pistons and if they're corroded or scuffed up,
replace them as well. I reused mine with the new O rings and have had no
leaks since.
I've attached a pdf file with the
Cleveland parts catalog. I'm not sure if the IV's use the same brakes as
the ES (Tim can tell you this), but if they do, the assembly is model 30-61E and
the illustration and parts list can be found on pages 8 and 9 in this
document. Once you know your part number(s), Aircraft Spruce can special
order them from Cleveland. I took the opportunity to also order a new set
of brake linings to have on hand for my next change.
Good luck,
Skip Slater
