Dan,

I had to replace mine at about 650 hours. It is a nasty job, so I took it to a mechanic that I know who does a lot of engine work. He was able to remove it and replace it without removing the engine.
This is an aggravating engineering problem that Continental needs to fix not just sell replacement parts. It is outrageous as it can cause engine failure, too.

Subject: [LML] Starter adapter drive

Has anyone ever replaced a starter adapter drive on a TSIO550? (this has the turbo scavenger pump on the back of it)

I currently have the problem of the starter motor running but the prop not turning past a compression stroke.  I am told that the whole assembly has to come off the back of the engine and the shaft and spring replaced or rebuilt.  The problem I have on the IV is the distance from the back of the shaft to the firewall is only 2 or 3 inches.  I don't think this is enough room to slide the assembly out.  Will the engine have to be moved forward to remove this assembly?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
