If you
really want a better Lancair 235, hang a Rotax 914 on it (and put the battery up
front to compensate for the reduced weight). It will climb faster and
cruise faster for far less fuel, which can be car gas. At about 12,500'
and above cruise will be equal to or exceed the IO-360. Remove the chin
intake for better aerodynamics and more speed. Too, if you ever have the
misfortune to land belly up, you will only need to replace the prop as the
clutch will protect the engine. Overhaul will be far cheaper, and useful
load will be higher. You can even use a liquid heat exchanger for cabin
heat.
Really, stuffing that huge IO-360 into that little
airframe is a mistake. I loved my 235, and the only complaints I had about
it would have been eliminated with the 914 and a C/S prop.
Cheers,
Bill
Brent,
There is one
additional problem to consider, and that is the 235 was a little short on
rudder control and the later models have a longer fuselage to improve the
rudder power. The addition of a IO360 will make that problem
worse.

Subject: [LML] 235 Oleo Nose Strut
I am asking for information concerning the
pnuematic oleo nose strut for a Lancair 235. I have been looking
for a strut to convert my 235 from the stiff dog leg style to the pneumatic
one. I am confused as to which ones are the correct one. I
understand some have poor centering capability(early model) and some are from
various manufacturers. I am sure some of you have seen the one for sale
on Ebay. Is the one of the good ones or one to stay away from. I
have the same question about the front nose fork also. I intend to run
an IO360 with c/prop if this has any bearing as to the weight. If any
one has any information about this please let me know. I would like to
obtain the right one the first time. Thanks!
Brent
