Quite few years ago I did a combined flying and
backpacking vaction in that area. I spent a few days at the Grand Canyon
and a few days at Bryce Canyon National Park. Bryce is about 100nm N of
Grand Canyon. The scenery at both parks was worth the trip. Both had
good airports but at that time only Grand Canyon had shuttle service from the
airport to the park. The Bryce Canyon airport is only a
few miles from the park entrance but there weren't many services at the
airport and only a couple of motels in the area. On the other hand there
aren't as many people.
Cedar City, UT has more services at the airport and
in town than Bryce. It's about 115nm NW of Grand Canyon.
On the other hand the Sedona, AZ area is
beautiful. You really don't want to miss seeing it. It's about 70nm
SE of Grand Canyon. Flagstaff, AZ might make a good home base. It's
close to Grand Canyon and Sedona, has a full service airport and lot's of
lodging in the area. If this is your first trip to Arizona you might want
to see if you can get some recent copies of Arizona Highways magazine (http://www.arizonahighways.com).
It's published by the state, has great photography, good articles, lots of
information about Arizona, and no advertising.
No, I don't live in AZ, I just really like the
scenery.
