My wife was VERY upset about Lancair airplanes crashing; when she happened onto the LML while I was in the 40 hour testing of my Legacy (she happened to find it when one of these "safety" discussions was going on back in 2005). I thought I was going to have to sell (and offered to) my new Legacy to bring peace back into the household. This from a lady who has been around military and airline flying the entire time we have been married. She kept her peace through my three combat tours in Southeast Asia, including me being shot down twice, and loosing several friends in peace time accidents. All it took was to read the LML and she lost it. She was convinced the Legacy was going to kill me in short order. There are some folks on here that present Lancair airplanes in ways that are less than complementary. If I knew nothing about Lancairs, and was looking to inform myself as to the wisdom of maybe building/buying one for my personal use, and my first stop in this search for information was one of these accident discussions on the LML, it would be my last and only stop. It is somewhat like reading a story in the newspaper, and about which you have first hand knowledge. You read the story and it is far from the way things really happened. I can only speak from the Legacy point of view. IT IS NOT A DANGEROUS AIRPLANE! It is a very nice flying airplane that will take two people from coast to coast in an easy flying day. All of the high performance airplanes that I have flown had flight regimes that were labeled "PROHIBITED". If you go there bad things happen. It makes no difference if you are new or experenced in the plane. Laws of physics (gravity/aerodynamics) will prevail. My prohibited areas include: no jousting with Thor (thunderstorms) and no slow flight below 5,000' AGL (115Kts in the base turn, target 100Kts on final). There are other areas that I try to avoid. My point is, being called "stupid" by a flight instructor, flying 100 hours dual, or any of the other fixes that the group likes throw out there are not going to change the laws of aerodynamics. What are YOUR prohibited areas? If you want to fly slowly, install vortex generators or buy a Piper Cub. Lynn Farnsworth Super Legacy #236 TSIO-550 Powered Race#44
