One thing I notice is that the list shows the IO-550N19B and 20B with 60A alternators. I'd recommend getting 70A, especially with a 12V system. I have a 70A 12V system in my Navion with an IO-550B and given the amount of electrical equipment used for IFR I consider it adequate but not excessive. I used an E-T-A  413-K14-LN2-70A breaker from Allied Electronics for the output- specs are at www.e-t-a.com .

If you go to the TCM website in Aviator Services you can access the configurations for new and rebuilt engines. For those models the only 12V alternator listed is a 70A so it might be worth asking Lancair about.  -Bill Wade

Subject: [LML] Legacy Engine Options

Hey LML gang,

We’re ready for an engine for our Legacy under construction and expect to leave Oshkosh with an order placed.  We want an IO-550 class engine since that’s a well worn path in the Lancair community.  We’d appreciate opinions and advice from the community on engine choice, features (customizations), and providers.  The options we know of for consideration are:

From Continental thru Lancair:

From custom build shops with “blue printing”, flow balancing, and other special features:

  • BARRETT Performance Aircraft, Inc. Custom re-manufactured engine
  • Performance Engines, Inc. Custom re-manufactured engine

Are there other engine shops we should be considering?  Suggestions on custom options, spec’s?  What kind of experiences have people had dealing with the custom shops?

Thanks,

Valin & Allyson Thorn
