I concur with your assessment.  I would love to hear of others that provide real "Dyno" results.  One of the respected names has fallen on hard times for non-delivery as contracted and triggered the phrase "Hollywood Horsepower" by fabricating the delivered horsepower claims.  That led to one RV-10 owner believing his IO-540 was actually delivering 325hp with 100LL and no turbo.  What is most valuable is the willingness to balance components to a limit far exceeding the original manufacturer.

Their responses have always been accurate, fair and comprehensive.  Being a family business, they are also known for being straight shooters and timely.

I would recommend Barrett.  Good people to deal with.  They will do what they say, when they say it.

They allowed me to watch final assembly and dyno testing.  As far as I know (other listers please correct me if I am wrong), they are the only engine builder who has a dyno and actually dyno tests their engines.

Subject: [LML] Legacy Engine Options

Hey LML gang,

We’re ready for an engine for our Legacy under construction and expect to leave Oshkosh with an order placed.  We want an IO-550 class engine since that’s a well worn path in the Lancair community.  We’d appreciate opinions and advice from the community on engine choice, features (customizations), and providers.  The options we know of for consideration are:

From Continental thru Lancair:

From custom build shops with “blue printing”, flow balancing, and other special features:

·   BARRETT Performance Aircraft, Inc. Custom re-manufactured engine

·   Performance Engines, Inc. Custom re-manufactured engine

Are there other engine shops we should be considering?  Suggestions on custom options, spec’s?  What kind of experiences have people had dealing with the custom shops?

Thanks,

Valin & Allyson Thorn
