John,
I had Performance set up my TSIO550 with dual Lightspeed EI. The initial system was a little quirky and when run very lean a cylinder would sometimes flame out in the cylinder and the gas re-ignite in the exhaust (at least that is what we surmised). Klaus came up with a fix and the dual EI ran fine until the de-ice system was activated. The power surges (7 kw is a heck of a surge!) would occasionally interrupt the firing sequence. We re-routed the wiring to minimize cross-talk but by then I was becoming concerned about the whole EI concept. When the EI ran it was great (150 LoP and still smooth) but if a transient should zap one box it could easily zap both. So we tore out one box and replaced it with a pressurized mag.
Now on run-up when I ground the mag there is no change in RPM and when I turn off the EI I see about75-100 rpm drop. Seems the engine is just fine running on the EI and I get the same efficiency that I had with dual EI - but I now have a back-up using separate and dissimiliar technology. Gives me a bit of the warm and fuzzy.

Subject: Lightspeed Plasma III in Performance Engine
Does anyone have data or anecdotal information on problems with Plasma III EI system? A recent accident in California involving off airport landing of a IVP has brought up concerns in my mind. I have a Performance Engines TSIO 550 with the Plasma III ignition (not flying yet) and so did the referenced aircraft. I am told that the cause of the accident was sudden engine stoppage and evidence points to failure of one of the redundant EI systems, the failure of which may have brought on the failure of the second.
I'd like to know if anyone has data on the Plasma III. I'm also interested in anecdotal accounts positive or negative that might help allay concerns or lead to solutions of problems with the system.
Has anyone used a single Plasma III and a magneto backup with a TSIO 550?
