The attached pictures show the induction system I built for the IO-550 in my
Lancair IV.
Fred Egli said he had good experience with the K and N air filter tucked to
one side, so that is what I installed. I put in the largest cone filter I
could fit. It is rated for more than 300 HP. I put the alternate air inlet
on the other side.
I have only the first sketchy results of flight testing, but it appears that
the K and N filter, though seemingly small, has minimal pressure drop. At
24 square at 1500 feet, opening and closing the alternate air changed
manifold pressure only 0.1 in. Hg. At higher altitudes with lower density
air I would expect a bit more of a difference, but I must admit being
surprised by the small difference.
I also measured induction air temperature and found that the temperature
varied only 2-3F degrees from the OAT reading with either air filter or
alternate air selected.
I hope this helps,
Fred Moreno

Subject: Intake for IO550
Since Bill is out of the county for now, he has asked me to find out if any
of you have suggestions and pictures for an intake arrangement for the
IO550. I saw one elaborate one on lml but how about something not so Fancy?
I hear Fred Egli has one on his L-IV so I hope to go visit him today or
tomorrow. Then I am off to Hungary and Spain so there is not an immediate
rush but a timely response would be appreciated.
