Re: ground tug for a IVP

Colyn,

I have found that making a set of wedge shaped ramps will aid your efforts greatly. They will make all the difference in getting over the lip of your hangar entrance. For a really low tech solution, they can even be made of wood. Metal will last longer, but it won’t work any better. Make them about 18 inches wide. That will give a lot of flexibility as you position your airplane.

You can make a set out of metal fairly easily by using a tube welded to a flat piece of steel plate. You can get both at your local metal supply. You need only choose the right diameter of tube to get the correct height. Very easy to make and they also really tend to stay in place. If you want to go really hi-tech, you could use diamond plate. In that case, you’ll probably want to bolt them down so that they don’t get “borrowed”.

Hi Jeff,

I called powertow and they claim that their 12V electric model is not strong enough to use with chains (in ice and snow).  Do you think the same might be true of the tow buddy here?   Also I have about a 1.7" lip on my hangar entrance to get over, do you think that would be a challenge (assume full fuel or 3300 lbs. or so)?

I looked at the wag-aero page.   The variable speed control looks like a really nice feature.  and I would much prefer electric to gas.

I did not see any choice of heavy duty or not....

thanks,

Colyn

I use the Tow Buddy from http://www.wagaero.com/

Definately get the heavy duty motor/controller.

And don't use a retired aviation battery...use a new tractor battery.

The company WagAero made the fittings for the scissor closer.

Does anyone have experience using a ground tug such as a 40EZ with a Lancair IVP?  Really I'm asking if you have figured out how to adapt a GA tug to fit the IVP nose gear.
