Hi Rick,
Now that I have returned from my self imposed exile for uttering
silliness on the issue of weight and balance.....
When you say you have estimates of between 1.5k and 2.2k for clear coat,
what does this include? It takes relatively little time and material to
apply two coats of clear. If you get two coats of clear and they send
you on your way, it's a bad deal. If you get two coats of clear or maybe
three and then, after an appropriate cure time, they wet sand the entire
plane with 12 and then 8 micron paper followed by machine polish, you
have a very good deal.
One very important factor to consider is UV protection and if you get
this with the single stage process, you may not need or want the clear
coat. The difference a really good paint job and a drop dead to die for
paint job is what happens after the paint is applied. Of course, all the
prep work before color is most critical, but, if you take the time to
remove any trace of orange peel (see above), you will achieve
perfection. All it takes is time and money. (big grin)
