Tom – Colyn – Thanks for your
inputs.
The reason I asked is, on my recent
transcontinental odyssey, pretty much over the GAFA, (if you don’t know
what the GAFA is, I’ll explain it off LML), both my Garmin 295 and AvMap
EK IV lost satellite signals intermittently every few seconds, while the KLN89B
happily continued to receive all available satellites. This went on for some
time.
It is also a phenomenon which has arisen
recently, as both have always received satellite signals without problem for
the past four, and two years respectively.
Being portables, both GPS antennas are
located on the instrument panel combing in full view of the sky.
I also took a newish HP PDA incorporating
GPS with me and suction cupped it to the canopy and it had no problem receiving
satellite signals over the GAFA or anywhere else.
I am aware that there are active and
passive antennae for GPS.
I don’t have VOR ILS - gave all
that junk away a few years ago when I sold the Airbus.
Cheers
Dom
