Jim,

I am currently using U-TECH 3.8 Polyurethane System. This paint has not chipped on my plane. You can read about the paint at http://www.akzonobelcarrefinishes.net/default.asp?sid=65395&pid=452. My paint is always applied by a painter, not by me.

Hey Lorn,

I was wondering if you could key me in on this issue of leading edge tape.  Are people using it to protect their paint from chipping off?  I don't see how a 1" stripe of tape will help.

They do sell wider tapes but you have a bigger problem than tape is going to fix.

Maybe the builder of my airplane didn't to a good a job with his paint.

The problem may be the type of paint used. You need to talk to a paint pro.

The airplane only had 110 hours on it when I bought it (it was 9 years old at the time). It ad only tiny areas of chipped paint on the leading edge.   Now I have about 320 hours on it all together over the last year and a half, and I'm developing several large patches on the leading edges where the paint is peeling off.  By "large" I mean two and three inches across. Do you think that's because of a poor paint job?

I think so but, again, talk to a paint pro.

When I re-paint, is this why people are talking about leading edge tape?

I don't need the tape.

I have flown through several light to moderate showers for several minutes.

So have I. These showers have never caused my paint to come off.

My speeds are about the same as yours below.

Thanks,

Jim.

I used leading edge tape from Lancair for 2 years. I believe that the
tape was 3M. I have now had the tape off for 6 years. My descent speeds
are up to 200 kias. I normally cruise at 160 kias.

I couldn't tell the difference.
