That line appeared about an hour after the plane was reported missing. I too am confused with that line. Some ATC help here, but I think it was a way to distinguish the track as not moving on the screen to assist with the work load. What is with the long straight line on FlightAware? Does it just extrapolate from the last known heading? We use it alot but I've never seen a plot like that. I would assume that can't be the real track.
