I did a little more reading. FWIW it
looks like the TruTrak DFC and DigiFlight series of autopilots have an internal
magnetometer. The ADI Pilot and Sorcerer do not.
One comment on the ADI (and ADI Pilot) pitch
presentation. While the ADI's "pitch" information is really VSI (I think
somewhere I read it was gyro stabilized VSI) it does have a feature to help out
in the situation where you're slow and the nose is getting high, even though the
instrument may show the nose below the horizon. Part of the setup is to
program a minimum airspeed into the ADI. Below that speed the ADI will
flash an airspeed warning message. Not a perfect solution, but
it might help.
