I've noticed that most of the "EXPERIMENTAL" placards that are installed on the doors or door frames of Lancair IV and ES aircraft are typically done with the letters following a straight line as opposed to following the contour of the door or frame. I've recently started doing some vinyl cutting and have duplicated the curves on those surfaces and have used them as the path for the text to follow in my vinyl cutting software. As you can see from the attached photo, it looks much nicer to have the letters properly fill the space and follow the contour of their mounting surface. (Pardon the mislocation on the door lettering... in my haste to check the curve I failed to properly center the letters so they're offset to the left side in the photo.) If any of you are interested, I can provide these either as permanent stick-on vinyl letters or as a paint mask cut from low-tack vinyl masking material. Either one is available for $20 (postage included), and I'll ship them flat so the multiple layers of material don't become detached during shipment. I'll also include an instruction sheet to help insure that you don't have any problems with installation. Just drop me an email at marv@lancair.net and let me know whether you'd like the black vinyl stickons or the paint mask and be sure to include a mailing address. BTW, if doing the paint mask you can achieve a nice flat surface by airbrushing the letters and removing the mask before the paint is completely cured, then covering the lettering with a couple coats of clear. Lightly wetsand after cure with some 1000, then 1500 grit and then buff... you'll have a surface that is flat enough for the inflatable door seal to be able to seal against.
