If going on a long x-country trip, the power reduction becomes automatic as altitude is gained. On short trips, I reduce the MP when I get to about 3,000 feet and no longer climbing. The extra fuel (fuel enrichment feature of the engine) helps quite a bit with cooling the engine. This enrichment feature only comes into play at full throttle. If I reduce the power too early, the fuel enrichment feature shuts off and my CHT's goes up the roof! I do, however, reduce the rpm as soon as I get to 120 knots and climbing (around 2,300-2,400rpm), mainly to reduce the noise levels, both inside and outside the cockpit.
