With all the discussion prior to OSH this year, I was a little worried about
going in in a fast Legacy. However, that was all to turn out a no problem.
3 of us met in Fairmont, MN (about 1.5hrs West of OSH) on Saturday before
OSH. We waiting until what we thought would be the end of the mass arrivals
that always come into OSH on that Sat afternoon. We had lots of discussion
about whether to use the Warbird arrival, or the 135kts one. In the end, we
elected to take the 135kts approach altitude. It worked out perfectly.
I was a little worried at one time, when the ground controllers made a blind
call tell everyone about the 90kts approach speed and altitude and saying
"Everyone should be there.... Pause, pause, pause, unless 90kts is too slow
for you, then adjust to the other altitude and fly in at 135kts." As soon
as we heard that, we knew there would be no problem.
I did loose the other 2 Legacys that I was flying with, they got a base to
final entry for 18L. I was called an RV (go figure, was still a Legacy, but
with gear down and welded :) ), cleared for 27 and a straight in. As it
turned out, there were no airplanes between us and the runway, so we landed
and joined back up when we got to HomeBuilt Parking. It was actually a
piece of cake! I do know there is no way that I would have wanted to be on
the 90kts course. There were a bunch of Cessna, Cubs, Taylorcraft, etc that
were running 100% power just to keep 90kts somewhere close to the ASI
needle, that would not have been fun needing to make S-turns at that speed
behind them.
So, next year, when you come in, come in on the higher faster arrival and
stick with it. Unless they publish a Notam that cancels it, it should be
good, no matter what the ground guys say :)...
Hoping to do it next year in my Legacy!
