In talking with Carsten on an under-balance of my elevators, (I had balanced and closed the elevators per the manual) he recommended sanding down and opening the end of the c/w area to allow additional lead to be installed and then closing back up with a rounded finish. I made a form out of some plastic pipe to make a 2 bid cover that would be uniform in shape, installed this piece over the newly balanced area, and then installed a 2 bid over the cover lapping back onto the elevator c/w. The result is great looks and LOTS of clearance between the stab and the c/w for ice. An additional benefit is when the elevator is deflected at all in flight the air now will travel over a rounded surface. For the last 2 years I have talked to TKS on any developments on de-ice for the IV. I have seen the effectiveness of many de-ice systems and feel the glycol drip works the best for my region and flying conditions. I was given the name of a builder developing the TKS on his IV and now can't find his info. Would appreciate any info relating to this system developed on the IV. Although I considered this option to be important before, events over the last few days make it a "must consider" now. Just spent the last 3 days assisting the Coast Guard and the CAP flying grids trying to find friend and fellow pilot who went down at 4:00 AM while on an ILS approach to our airport. The 10,000+ hour cargo pilot reported moderate ice on his de-ice equipped Travelair 8 miles from the marker, we found him about 5 miles farther up the localizer. Needless to say the results were very sobering. Any info on de-ice would be greatly appreciated.
