My hangar mate has a simple and quite reliable gear warning on his Falco (which I intend to install on my LNC2 at the next "annual"). It's a micro-switch that is triggered by the throttle being pulled back to or below a certain MP. Not sure what his is set for but think it's around 12 inches MP which isn't often approached except during setting up for landing. The warning is negated when the gear is down and locked via a switch activated by the gear.

The warning/MP setting needs to be adjusted for a particlular airplane but it should be quite easy to do.
