It's my understanding that if the engine has ever been changed in a
non-certified manner, ie, different oil pan for Lancair, AD not complied with,
or whatever, it cannot be used in a certified airplane without a complete
overhaul.  I understand that to mean you could not, for example, put the
"certified" oil pan back on the airplane and use it in a certified airplane.
From a practical perspective, the notations in the log book might be the only
thing that prevents you from making the changes and returning it to "certified"
service, although its probably illegal. I ran into this issue with oil impeller
AD on the 320 in my RV.
