I think the loose hinge compounded the bracket problem, and since the 1/8" thick bracket has a very limited number of flexures to deformation (and it was deformed) then breaking, I thought it best to do the alert.. All rod-end bearings and bolts were ok, but the "L" shaped bracket that attaches to the aileron itself with two AN-3 bolts (they were tight) actually had been pulled away from the aileron near the web of the bracket, about 0.010" or so. The bracket was deformed, the push-pull tube action had literally pulled the unsupported bracket away from the aileron .
