I use sight gauges for all three tanks. The top of the gauge is connected to a T at the wing tank tip vent with a tube, called the reference leg, to provide proper pressure to balance the fuel column. During testing I accidentally ran a tank dry due to condensation in the reference leg causing a pressure differential that resulted in a high reading. I solved that by collecting pitot air pressure with a tube on the belly
and metering it with an orifice through the reference legs keeping them clear of condensation. It has been trouble free since then, 2000 hr. I always keep plenty of fuel in the header. If there is serious interest I will take some photos and draw a sketch.
