I've flown behind three IO-550's in
Lancairs now (2 ES's and 1 Legacy) and have never had to use the boost pump for
anything except priming for starts. As far as I can see, turning the low
boost on at over 10,000 feet does nothing but make the engine run richer, which
you have to fix by backing off the mix. I've had these engines to density
altitude of 19K with no sign of vapor problems, and no need for boost. Go
figure.
