Kevin,
I have seen ice start to form 4 or 5 times on my LNC2. It was easy to see whenever I shined a dim 2 bulb L.E.D. 9 volt flashlight onto the wing.
You don't need much light to see ice. A flashlight will do.
My plane slows down about 30 kts with the start of RIM ice. It is pretty easy to tell that the ice is there. The problem isn't knowing that you have ice. The problem is doing something about it.

I am looking for a just the right light to use as an Ice Light. My
thought is to illuminate the Pilot's wing leading edge to see id I am
accumulating ice at night.
I think is will probably have to be turned on every so often for a
visual check. So I will have a switch on the panel for it.
What I am thinking, is a narrow beam high output L.E.D.
Grayhawk had mentioned he once had one on one of his planes?
