I have tried a couple locations in Legacys with success. Bascilly, anywhere
in the tail behind the baggage area bulkhead as far away from the pitch servo
as possible.
Another location that seems to work well for magnetometers is just behind the baggage bulkhead at the top of the fuselage. Fabricate a U-shaped bracket from e-glass, bond it in, and mount the device inside the bracket. It's definitely important to get as far from the pitch servo as possible. You should also avoid running electrical wires near the device.
