The folks at GAMI have an aux alternator they they have modified to get 30 amps from the vacuum pad and it can self-excite, ie. no battery is needed. They plan to sell it along with the PRISM ignition system. I believe that it is now available.

Jeff,
I've been thinking a lot about electrical failure modes.
Did your battery just run out of power or did it actually short?
I'm just wondering how paranoid to be about isolating the batteries so I can
take them completely out of the system.

One battery....hmmmmm. I may be wrong but alternators need a small electrical current to excite the field. I had a one battery, two alternator system until the one battery went south. Not fun...
