If you are dropping the parachutes, do you still plan to develop a canopy
release?

Incidentally (and not to change your mind), but 30lbs per rig is a pretty high
estimate.  Skydiving gear including harness, and two parachutes (main and
reserve) usually weigh around 20lbs (+or- 5lbs).  I haven't messed with
emergency rigs in awhile, but 30lbs sounds pretty high for modern emergency
rigs.
