To all flying behind IO-550 engines. I recently took
my brothers Cirrus in for maintenance and the mechanic
told me that there are a lot of problems with the oil
dip-stick breaking on the IO-550 engines. He
cautioned me to look at the dip-stick in my engine.
Sure enough after 162 hours as you can see in the
attached picture, the dip-stick is cracked. The
Cirrus has just over 400 hours and the dip-stick is
not cracked.
I suggest that everyone monitor that dip-stick for
cracks. My old one has one spot weld that attaches it
to the cap. The new one has two spot welds.
Hope this information helps you.
