Well, September 3 was not yesterday, but that is the internet, so we do not need to be that accurate. In the linked new story, the pilot was quoted as saying: “We practice egress all the time, but I had to do it in a flash.”

How frequently do you practice egress from your IV-P, or Legacy? Are they designed to be egresses like that? Are you sure they can be egressed like that?

Now let me throw in a dimension that has not been brought up so far: What about your passenger? Unless you fly a single place Lancair, what will your passenger(s) do? Is everyone flying with you going to have to be up on parachuting and egress skills? You do realize that the pilot will have to be the first one out in a IV/IV-P/ES and there are no two ways about it. Will you have chutes for the 100 lb kid as well as the 250 lb FAA standard passenger and a half? If not, are you going to fly with a parachute while your passenger gets to enjoy a few extra minutes of flight after you bail out? Are you going to fly without a chute to show solidarity with your passenger? If so, if it is safe enough for you to fly without a chute when a passenger is there, then why is it less safe when there is no passenger? If that is OK because of the way you fly when solo versus when you have a passenger, you have a lot of soul searching to do about your attitude towards safety. Specialty flying like races, aerobatics etc are not applicable here.

I would suggest that we ponder these questions in our own mind and let the thread rest.
