Grayhawk,
If it had to happen, it did so at the best
possible time. We didn't eat the engine and prop.
We don't know why it shimmied yet. It happened
during a normal landing; no cruncher or side loads. The mechanic that did the
work and saw a photo of the broken part said something that agreed with what I
thought... Part of the break looked old (a crack) and part was new... I think a
previous owner(s) had some hard landings and so began a crack/failure. After all
those years, I was the poor s.o.b. that paid that debt. It just was time for it
to break all the way through.
I have a hard time believing the an engine install
that is only 35 lbs heavier caused this. It may be the strut pressure was too
low, or that there was a failure within the strut. I've never had a nose strut
vibration or shimmy problem before...
More will be known later. Thrash is on for
Reno.
EVERYBODY has been SO GREAT with this. Joe Bartels
at Lancair got a loaner strut out to me today and probably spent a lot of time
looking for a new mount. No dice on that until Will called up from Ky. His short
mount will be on the way soon. We'll weld up this one as a temporary fix to get
me to Reno. Then we'll put the new mount on as soon as we can.
This is a great community. Thanks to
everybody.
