Sometimes I feel like a voice in the wilderness... You are number five to watch your gear box walls move in and out. Fun, isn't it? My guess is that there are 95 more planes out there doing the same thing-I hope the word gets out before someone has a catastrophic failure. I moved the flap actuator handle up and down until all the pressure bled off the system, and was prepared to sop up lots of hyd fluid when I opened the fittings. To my surprise, I saw about ten drops, not a gusher. To disassemble the cylinder itself, drain the fluid, mark the angle of the fittings with a felt tipped pen, remove the fittings, then push the end of the cylinder in about 1/4", which allows you to easily remove the C ring. Be sure to put the spacer in the cylinder in the correct end to shorten the stroke in the right direction. I suggest you fill the hyd cylinder with fluid before you put it back in the system, as I didnt, and it took a long time for the air to get out of it. John, I am posting my answers to your letter on the builder's site so that more people will take this problem seriously, and I won't have to repeat the disassembly instructions. Our heartfelt thanks should be given to Bill Maddox for bringing this to our attention in the first place-I thought I was imagining things until I remembered that he mentioned it. Well, at least 5% of the planes have this problem, maybe it is time for an AD to be issued?
