As for standardization, Jeff....that was a funny one! ;)-

Yeah Barry,
Its real funny when you are in an aircraft without placarded switches
because the owner is no longer around (dead) and the family wants to sell it
and
you apply what you believe is aileron trim and it is yawing incredibly. HA
HA
HA....(almost forgot to laugh.) Just remember, anything you do
with your aircraft will be reflected in the sale price later on.
Jeff
Sounds like an exciting time!...you mean you didn't confirm trim inputs on the ground of an unfamiliar and unplacarded airplane? <gasp> You're human? LOL! Hope it didn't send you inverted! ;)-
For the rest of the list, Jeff and I have exchanged pleasantries off list, so this good natured ribbing, not a flame war... ;) I'm fangs in now, Jeff...
Jeff did ask me about a mid-west formation clinic. I don't know about mid-west, but I'd be willing to try to put something together in say Utah, or another central point in the West.....any takers?
Also, I might as well pitch this now. We are in the midst of planning Desert Thunder III, which is scenario driven tactical training. Our staff includes combat vets from Vietnam through Gulf II as well as Red Flag, Cope Thunder, etc. There is the need for all different types of aircraft and pilots, as well as people interested in providing ground support (simulating AAA and manpads - shoulder fired surface to air missiles - with reflective mirrors, as well as supporting simulated Close Air Support and Combat Search and Rescue operations). If you have any interest in seeing what it's like to be involved in today's tactical flying environment, this event is for you!
No matter what role you play or what type of plane you fly, I guarantee it is some of the most fun and rewarding flying you will do as a civilian. This IS NOT simulated dog fighting. This is about employing cooperative tactics taught the first day of the clinic in a controlled environment with experienced aviators as your mentors. The Rules Of Engagement are ensure safety while still allowing the buzz of combat air operations to pulse through your veins. You are never pushed beyond your demonstrated capabilities, and you will leave with a first hand taste of what it's like to fly "in theater" wether your flying a strike mission, aggressor, tanker, ABCCC (airborne command communication and control) running the net, or flying pre-strike recon. If you are not a seasoned pilot you will be teamed with one (all GREAT guys, by the way!) to act as the WIZZO...an important and fun role in it's own right.
If you are a former military pilot or just someone who has an interest in military type flying, this event is for you. Our biggest critics have been long time tactical jet pilots (you know, the guys with really big watches...)...until they come and experience the high degree of professionalism and well thought out progression...each and every one has said after 3 days, "when's the next one?!" You will mix with guys who have been shot at with real bullets and missiles, and every day aviation enthusiasts....it is truly a great time.
Dates of Desert Thunder III are Oct. 26-29 in Thermal, California (KTRM). We have as much fun at night as we do flying during the day. We stay at the Fantasy Springs hotel which provides a beautiful conference center for our evening activities and ground school.
Please contact me directly at barry@flyredstar.org if you are interested in participating.
Cheers,
Barry
