My plane is stuck in BTR. I think I have a failure of my starter and thought I'd ask you braniaks what might be up. I began cranking at 11.3 volts. This is lower than normal but will usually crank it up (OAT 45 deg). The prop turned a quarter turn followed by clicking. This gave me the impression that I needed a jump. Unfortunately, the jump start did nothing to help. No clicking or prop rotation. Following a very long charge (battery at 13 volts cables attached directly to the battery), the only thing that happens is the bendix (geared thing?) engages with no prop rotation. With jumper cables attached there is a large amperage draw (greater than 50 amps) upon starter pushbutton engagement. The bendix retracts upon hand turning the prop (turns free no binding). All cables are snug with no corrosion. There was however, a few metal shavings on the ring gear. I've never seen this before. The only other salient points I can think of include a solid day of rain prior to the start attempt. I've missed some of the details on starter solenoids and Sky-Tek starters thread. I have a main solenoid for the starter mounted on the firewall and a second one mounted on the starter. What do you think my problem is and what is the best fix? What trouble shooting would you recommend to confirm it?
