LANCAIR FLYIN - Medford, Oregon
The fly-in went well. The weather was at optimum with clear
skies and a temperature of about 65 degrees for the first arrivals at 8
AM. Some of the arrivals included an overhead break. One arrival was
a 3 Lancair formation with an overhead break. Planes arrived throughout
the morning with the last arrivals at about 10 AM. Most pilots reported
smooth air with a nice 15 knot tailwind.
The fly-in included 16 planes with all but 1 being Lancairs. A
Lancair from Southern California, passing thru enroute north, heard about the
fly-in and stopped by for a look. Three other planes were not able to make
it with most reporting adverse weather conditions either at the departing
airport or enroute.
There was a total of 38 people with several builders driving in. We
had a lot of locals taking interest in the rows of lancairs lined up. It
was an impressive site. I overheard an airline pilot ask the tower
what the event was. The tower responded that it was a Lancair
fly-in. The airline pilot responded that "those Lancairs are fast
airplanes".
Everyone filled up with a nice breakfast from the AeroDiner which
continued until noon. Our only snafu was the lack of lunch
which was as a result of a communication breakdown between the
FBO and the AeroDiner chef. Fortunately, we had a backup which included
fruits, nuts, cookies, and drinks.
In the early afternoon pilots began departing with several headed for the
Oregon coast for the weekend or for some scenic flying. They were to form
up for some air-to-air photos enroute.
I look forward to the next Lancair Fly-in wherever it may
be. I have attached a few pics of the day.
