Cool time of day. If it were mine, I would ask Jack McAlester what kinds of TIT's and fuel flows that he has at full power.... For some current numbers. Absent that, and keeping in mind that I have not looked at the numbers for that engine in about two years, but from memory (always dangerous to rely upon): When you power up, make sure the TIT is under 1400, and preferably under 1350. I like TITs around 1240 to 1300 on 8.5:1 compression engines with 22d timing at full power/full rich. But there is some variability with probe placement from one installation to another. Unless the fuel flow is adequate, abort and adjust the fuel flow UPWARDS. If it is too rich, you CAN use the red knob to correct that problem. Fuel flow at WOT x 2700 should be in the 43 to 46 gph range, depending a bit on the engine and ambient conditions. Have somebody watch and communicate on the radio and make sure you are not TOO rich with too much black smoke before you get to takeoff speed. CLIMB at 160-170KIAS full rich. You can use WOT - - (where did Monty set it??? Around 36 to 37 " Hg, would assume) and 2700 RPM for the shallow climb. Level off at 2000 to 3000 feet AGL and fly around at high speed and essentially full rich. Either use full power, or try 33" x 2500 and a TIT under 1400d F, or even full rich. TITs ought to be under 1400 or so. Again, preferably under 1350. 1st flight: 10 minutes -- stay near/overhead the airport and LAND and then decowl the engine and hunt for leaks and chaffing carefully. 2nd flight: 30 to 40 minutes. You can climb at 300 to 400 fpm and high KIAS to cooler/smoother altitudes, but stay as low as practical. Land, decowl and look again. 3rd flight: Go somewhere, but go at lower altitudes (under 14,000 feet) and come back. Consider decowling and looking again. 2 hours? Want to run LOP ? OK. 30 to 33" x 2500 and 16 to 17 gph. 4th flight - - out to 5 to 7 hours. Same as 3rd flight. If at any time you see any CHT get above 410d F - - - then DO SOMETHING right then to get them under control. I like < 380 for routine normal day in day out CHTs. At 5 to 7 hours, drain the oil and change the filter. Don't bother with an oil sample. Cut the filter and hunt for metal. Should have some small amounts, but no part numbers. Replace the oil and filter and then fly like it was broken in. It almost certainly will be. Change the oil again and oil sample at about 25 hours. Regards, George
