Generally you want a rather tight beam spread, the opposite of most 'fog' lights. I'm testing my choices with a 50amp battery charger in my back yard. I use a cessna bulb as my reference for beam width and brightness. I've tried QUITE A FEW auto assemblies and most don't come close to the cessna bulb. I'm in the deep country, landing on DARK runways chock full of deer so good lights are a must for me. FWIW, I'm planning on putting my lights in the winglets.
