As a matter of fact Lycomming has an AD out that wants the engine torn down if it has been over 10% of maximum RPM for more than 3 seconds.
Here is my problem. I have had the engine out 4 times and 100% of the time that the engine has been taken out it has not been put back in correctly. The engine tear-down isn't the problem. The problem is getting all of the accessories off and back on. The last time my engine was taken out, 2 of the iridium plugs were dropped and broken, the timing on one mag was set to 50% BTDC and the prop governor cable came loose within 6 months. I can guarantee that if the engine is taken out, it will have major problems.
My intention is to first of all find and fix the problem and then to borescope, compression test and check the oil for metal before getting a ferry permit to bring the plane home. I sure hope that it is not the crank plug.

I would look at the engine also. I believe Lycoming recommends an engine
tear down after an overspeed. There should be a SB on it.

I was leaving Paducah, KY Sunday when my prop governor (I hope)
stopped working. On climb-out at about 95 kts the engine RPM went
quite high.
